Skeleton Key is a game development studio and division of Wizards of the Coast. We are a group of industry veterans who are guided by the belief that by empowering our teams and providing the necessary time, tools, and support we can foster a creative culture where everyone can do their best work.

 

Our studio is located in Austin, TX, and we are looking for a passionate and dedicated Senior Writer to join us and bring our first AAA game to life. This role will be based out of Austin, TX.

 

Reporting to the Creative Director, you will be a key contributor as we enter pre-production, helping craft story content, characters, and dialogue across the project. This role focuses on writing interactive branching narrative content for cinematic sequences and gameplay, working closely with colleagues across teams to deliver a cohesive and engaging player experience.

 

What you'll do:

  • Write branching story content for interactive dialogue scenes and gameplay. Please note that this project will include discussions and depictions of mature content.
  • Collaborate with Creative Director, team leadership, and teammates across departments to revise and iterate on narrative content as needed at all phases of production.
  • Contribute to storyline planning, world building, character development, and environmental storytelling.
  • Work closely with Cinematics, Design, Art, and Audio teams to support implementation of narrative content to create a cohesive story experience.
  • Revise and polish dialogue and other writing to ensure clarity, tone, and consistency.
  • Maintain clear and organized documentation for scripts, storylines, and all other narrative content.
  • Playtest content throughout development and provide feedback to improve narrative pacing, clarity, and player experience.

 

What you'll bring:

  • 4+ years of professional writing experience in video games, including contributions to one or more shipped titles with voiced narrative content.
  • Strong creative writing skills with the ability to craft compelling interactive dialogue, memorable characters, and story moments.
  • Experience creating branching dialogue scenes with high player autonomy.
  • Ability to translate high-level narrative direction into clear, engaging written content.
  • Strong collaboration skills and experience working with cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Passion for storytelling in interactive media.
  • Please provide samples of your work, such as scripts, scenes, or links to published projects.

 

Nice to have:

  • Love for story-driven action RPG gameplay and systems!
  • Familiarity with opportunities and constraints in first-person storytelling.
  • Experience writing for scenes incorporating performance capture.
  • Background contributing to early pre-production narrative development.

The base salary range for this position is $109,100.00 to $163,700.00. The hiring range will vary based on factors such as experience, skills, location and market conditions. Additionally, employees may be eligible for annual and long-term incentives as part of their overall compensation package.
