The Principal Cloud Platform Engineer is a hands-on technical leader who builds the core foundations other engineers depend on every day. This role is for someone who enjoys shaping shared platforms that make systems more reliable, secure, and predictable as the organization scales.
You work close to the infrastructure layer, designing and building the underlying capabilities that support cloud environments, identity, connectivity, and operational visibility. The platforms you create become the default building blocks teams rely on, setting expectations for stability, consistency, and operational readiness across engineering.
What You'll Do:
Platform Direction
- Own the technical direction for core platform foundations as they are established and evolved
- Define supported patterns for how teams provision, deploy, and operate foundational services
Build Core Platform Foundations
- Design and build shared platform capabilities used as the default across engineering
- Establish consistent approaches for provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management
- Ensure platform foundations are designed for reliability, repeatability, and safe change
Reliability and Operational Readiness
- Build resilience, observability, and operational guardrails directly into platform services
- Anticipate failure modes and reduce blast radius through platform design
- Treat platform foundations as production systems with clear ownership and operational expectations
Enable Delivery Teams
- Provide platform capabilities that teams can build on without owning underlying infrastructure
- Reduce custom infrastructure work by offering reliable, well-documented defaults
Technical Leadership
- Act as the technical owner for platform foundation decisions and tradeoffs
- Lead design discussions through clear writing, direct feedback, and sound engineering judgment
- Influence teams through credibility, clarity, and hands-on contribution
What You'll Bring:
- Strong systems thinking and engineering judgment from owning platform or infrastructure systems in production
- Experience designing shared platforms used by multiple teams
- Comfort operating in ambiguous, early-stage environments where platform foundations are still being defined
- Clear, direct communication with senior engineers and technical leaders
Core Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience in platform, infrastructure, or systems engineering
- Designed, built, or owned shared infrastructure or platform services used by multiple teams
- Experience building reliable, observable distributed systems
- Strong grounding in security, identity, and operational best practices
- Ability to operate independently and influence technical direction without formal authority
