The Role
We are looking for a commercial attorney to join our in-house legal team to support the APAC region with an emphasis on trading card game development and commercialization. The ideal candidate will have an excellent all-around understanding of commercial matters in the games industry. In this newly created role, you will work closely with our Magic: The Gathering Senior Attorney in the day-to-day provision of support and advice to other teams and departments within our businesses. This role will focus primarily upon Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters, but will also have expanded responsibilities for collaborative projects across Wizards and Hasbro brands as well as physical and digital product support.
Responsibilities:
- Advising on various commercial matters such as sales and distribution issues (including, but not limited to, anticompetition/antitrust issues and ecommerce) and retail trade marketing.
- Key responsibilities include a heavy emphasis on co-branded licensing agreement drafting; negotiating all phases of distributor agreements; supporting Wizards Retail Support and events teams and providing day-to-day guidance on legal issues relevant to Wizards’ core hobby channel.
- Developing standard operating procedures and other processes to facilitate efficient legal transactions and manage contract risks.
- Guiding APAC business teams on regulatory and compliance issues to ensure compliance with legal regulations with a special emphasis on issues relating anticompetition/antitrust, promotions/marketing and giveaways.
- Maintaining awareness and understanding of the latest developments in the law and technology as they relate to the Wizards business.
- Working with APAC business teams to develop best business practices related to recordkeeping, confidentiality, ethics, and general compliance.
Qualifications:
- Written and oral fluency in English and Japanese is required.
- Strong familiarity with intellectual property law and excellent legal drafting and negotiating skills; experience negotiating with and against large partners. Pragmatism in balancing costs and benefits and handling ambiguity.
- Ability to build trust and provide well-reasoned, business-based legal counsel based on rigorous legal research and learned expertise in the subject area; courage to identify and address risks and/or deficiencies.
- Ability to innovate and use technology to improve legal processes and best practices.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-evolving environment and handle high volume of work and variety of assignments, as well as recognize priorities and meet deadlines.
- Interest in working and ability to work well with internal stakeholders in multiple IPs and brands to meet the specific needs of those brands in each affected APAC region.
- Ability to work independently as well as in cross functional groups and collaboratively with team members; cross-cultural fluency and/or awareness.
- Working knowledge of legal processes and restrictions relevant to doing business in the APAC region.
- Strong analytical, project management, organizational and problem-solving skills, and demonstrated passion for creating and streamlining internal processes.
- Preferred: knowledge of licensing, ecommerce, retail hobby/gaming businesses or general entertainment industry, products distribution models and ‘new media’ developments.
Education:
- Qualified lawyer (U.S. J.D. or foreign equivalent) with minimum 4 years of experience
